Classification Of Phylum Arthropoda

(1) CLASS - ARACHNIDA :
Terrestrial or aquatic.
Abdomen without appendages
Eyes simple, no compound eyes.
Excretion by coxalglands and malpighian tubules.
Examptes : Buthus, Andtoctonus, Microcreagris,
Lycosa (wolf spider), Latrodectus (black widow), Achaeranea (house spider) Argiope (writing spider).
(2) CLASS - CRUSTACEA:
Head often joined with thorax|o form cephalothorax.
Head five segmented, bearir; two pairs of antennae, one pair of mandibles and two pairs of maxillae.
Appengages typically biramous.
Examples : Hutchinsoniella, Artemia, Apus, Lepdurus, Daphnia, cypridina, Lepas, Nebalia, Mysis, oniscus, squilla,
Astacus (cray fish), Euparagus(hermit crab)
(3) CLASS - MYRIAPODA (DIPLOPODA) :
Exclusively terrestrial, air breathing mandibulate arthropods.
Body worm-like made of head and elongated trunk with many similar leg bearing segments. . Antennae one pair,
jaw three pairs teOs more than eleven pairs. .
Sexes separate, gonad single gonoducts paired.
Examples : Julus, Spirobolus: Millipede (thousand legger).
(4) CLASS – Chilopoda.
Body divided into head of 5 segments, thorax of 4 segments and abdomen of 20-100 segments. . Thorax with one
pair of legs in each segment.
Each trunk segment a diplosegment with two pairs of legs.
Trunk with 15 to 173 segments, each segments with a pair of legs.
First pair of legs modified as poison claws. Scolopendra : Centipede (hundred legger).
(5) CLASS - TRILOBITOMORPHA :
Marine extinct or fossil arthropods.
Oldest fossils arthropods.
a Triarthrus - Cambrian to Permian period.
(6) CLASS - SYMPHYLA
Abdomen ending in a sharp telson or spine.
Cephalothorax in Limulus with large extended convex horse-shoe carapace. e.g. Limulus (Horse shoe or King Crab).
Head with one pair of antennae, one pair of mandibles and two pairs of maxillae
Example : Garden centipedes, Scolopendrella, Scutigerella
(7) CLASS - ONYGHOPHORA :
lt is a small group of only 70 living species of terrestrialArthropods. Some taxonomist gave it a separate status of
phylum.
Primitive, worm like, unsegmented.
Single pair of antennae eyes and jaws.
Numerous stumph, unjointed clawed legs.
considered as connecting link between Annelids and Arthropods. e.g. peripatus
(8) CLASS - INSECTA:
Body made of head (six fused segments), thorax (three segments) and abdomen (up to eleven segments).
Head with compound eyes (one pair), antennae (one pair), mandibles (one pair) and maxillae (two pairs).
Mouthparts modified for different feeding habits.
Thorax with three pairs of joined legs and one or two pairs of wings, which may be absent Lepisma
Respiration by tracheae, spiracles arranged laterally. Excretion by Malpighian tubutes. a Unisexual, fertilization
internal, development usually with metamorphosis,
Examples : Romalia-(grasshoppers), schistocera (locust), Periplaneta (cockroach), Gyltus (cricket), Mantis(praying
mantis), Phyllium (leaf insect), carausius (stick insect), Forficula (eanrvig), Ephemera (mayfly),lsoperla (stone fly),
Pediculus (human louse), cimex (bedbug), Ranatra (water scorpion), panorpa (scorpionfly), Musca (house fly), culex
(mosquito), Drosophila (fruit fly), Apis (honey bee), Xenopsyila (Fleas).
